BRAND GUIDELINES
The document that stops you re-deciding what your brand looks like every time someone makes something. Most businesses don't have one. The ones that do stop having the argument.
The book is the point. A brand that exists as a set of files and a few opinions gets re-decided every time someone new touches it. Written down, with the mark, the colours, the type and the rules for using them on facing pages, it stops being a matter of taste and becomes a matter of looking it up.
WHAT THIS ACTUALLY IS
A decision made once so it doesn't get made weekly.
Without guidelines, every new asset restarts the conversation about which blue, which logo file, whether this font is allowed and whether this is too much. Multiply that by a printer, an intern, a signage company and whoever runs your social, and the brand drifts. No single bad decision, just fifty small ones nobody logged.
Guidelines end that. They are an operating document, not a design exercise.
Three questions that get asked every week somewhere in a business without guidelines. The document answers all three in one line each, and the asking stops. What is left is the time those questions used to take, and a brand that looks the same on Tuesday as it did on Monday.
A brand that lives in one person's head doesn't scale past their attention.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
- Logo usage, with versions, spacing, minimum sizes, and what not to do
- Colour, with the codes for print, screen and web
- Typography and hierarchy
- Photography and imagery direction
- Voice and tone, with real examples rather than adjectives
- Application across the assets you actually produce
- Delivered as a document your printer and your intern can both follow
Each rule in the guidelines corrects a live example as it checks off. That is the whole job of the document: not to describe the brand, but to fix the next asset before it goes out wrong.
HOW IT WORKS
We audit what exists, resolve the contradictions, and document the result. If your brand was never formally defined, this is where it gets defined, from what is already working rather than from scratch. The hard part is the judgement: deciding which of six competing versions of the logo is the real one, why the blue drifted, and which rules a printer will actually follow. That is what the document is made of, and it is why one that works cannot be produced from a template.
HONEST NOTE
Guidelines nobody reads are worse than none.
A sixty-page PDF that lives in a folder has never protected a brand. These are written to be used mid-task by someone in a hurry: short, specific, and answering the questions people actually ask. A printer gets the page on colour and file formats. Whoever runs your social gets the page on the mark, the type and the tone. Nobody has to read the whole thing to use their part of it.
