HOME IMPROVEMENT & RENOVATION
MARKETING FOR DESIGN-BUILD & RENOVATION
Search engines can't tell the difference between a design-build firm and a man with a truck. Your marketing has to do it, because nothing else will.
You're not in the same business. Look like it.
THE PROBLEM
You're listed beside businesses you don't compete with.
A homeowner planning a $120,000 renovation and a homeowner who needs a door rehung type similar things into Google. The results put you side by side with businesses whose entire model is being cheapest.
That comparison damages you in a specific way. It anchors the homeowner on the wrong price before they understand what you do, so the first conversation starts with sticker shock — and you spend it defending a number instead of discussing a project.
Most firms respond by competing harder in the same lane: more reviews, more ads, more "free estimates." That deepens the confusion. The fix is to stop appearing in that comparison at all.
The moment you're compared on price, you've already lost the job you wanted.
HOW TO SEPARATE
Three things that sort you into the right category.
-
01
Sell design, visibly.
If you charge a design fee, say so and explain what it buys. Nothing separates a design-build firm from a contractor faster than being open about the fact that the drawing is part of the product.
-
02
Show whole projects, properly documented.
Before, during, after, with the thinking. A homeowner spending six figures is buying judgement and process. Show both.
-
03
Speak to the project, not the trade.
"Kitchen remodeling" is a trade term. "We took a closed 1970s layout and opened it to the garden" is a project — and it’s what the homeowner is actually imagining.
THE ENQUIRY IS THE BOTTLENECK
Most firms lose the job before the first meeting.
High-value renovation enquiries are researched, deliberate and few. Losing one is expensive in a way losing a repair call never is.
And they're routinely lost to slow response — a form that sits over a weekend, a call returned three days later, no acknowledgement in between. The homeowner doesn't chase. They move to the next firm, which is often worse and answered faster.
Fixing response is usually cheaper than any advertising and it protects every enquiry you already have.

WHY THIS CATEGORY
A single project can be worth more than a year of marketing. That changes the arithmetic entirely — the work doesn’t have to produce volume, it has to produce the right two or three conversations a quarter.
NEXT STANDARD
Find out who you're being compared to.
The audit shows where you appear, who appears beside you, and what a homeowner planning a major renovation finds when they research you. Findings inside 48 to 72 hours, and they’re yours whether or not we work together.
